London 2012 Olympics: First Saudi female Olympian’s Games dream lasts 82 seconds
THE Olympic dream of one of Saudi Arabia’s first two female team members was over in 82 seconds yesterday after a shortlived judo bout.
Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, 20, pictured, fought in a tight headscarf after a compromise was reached with the International Olympic Committee. She received a warm reception when she took to the Tatami against Melissa Mojica of Puerto Rico. However, after one minute and 22 seconds, her Olympics were over, as she was thrown for an ippon.
Ms Shahrkhani was a late entry after Saudi Arabia waited until June before confirming that women would be allowed to take part. It followed speculation that the entire Saudi team could have been disqualified because of gender discrimination.
With just a few weeks left to prepare for the London Games, the country’s only other female competitor is showjumper Dalma Rushdi Malhas.
