July date for Lords reform bill reading

THE government’s controversial House of Lords Reform Bill will go before MPs for its second reading on 9 July.

The second reading of the bill will take two days, Commons leader Sir George Young said.

Under the plans announced on Wednesday, the new Upper House would see its membership trimmed from more than 800 to 450, while 80 per cent of those sitting in the Lords will be elected.

Elected members would serve for a single 15-year term and would be paid £300 for each day they attend, up to a maximum payout of £45,000 a year.
