Jubilee factor boosts Royals in public’s eye

NINE out of ten British adults are satisfied with the way the Queen is doing her job, a new poll has revealed.

Carried out in the wake of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Ipsos MORI study showed that public satisfaction is at its highest level since 1992, when the polling body first included the question.

Following the Golden Jubilee, ten years ago, 82 per cent of people were satisfied with the Queen. She recorded her lowest satisfaction rating in 1998, when it fell to 66 per cent.

Prince Charles was also shown to be enjoying his best satisfaction ratings, with 78 per cent questioned expressing a positive opinion about his performance.

That is in dramatic contrast with the ratings he received in the wake of Princess Diana’s death, which saw a 46 per cent dissatisfaction rating and just 42 per satisfaction.

The Jubilee celebrations also changed some people’s minds about whether or not he should step to one side and allow Prince William to be the next monarch.

Tom Mludzinski of Ipsos Mori said: “Just 13 per cent want to see a republic, which is the lowest level we’ve recorded in a series of polls going back 20 years. Even during the Royal Family’s stickiest patches there has been no noticeable weakening in the public’s support for the monarchy. By any standards, these are polling numbers to die for. And of course, they contrast sharply with the low esteem in which the public hold our politicians.”
