Job fears over BAE changes

THE proposed merger between UK defence giant BAE and a European company is to be investigated by the Commons defence select committee, as concerns mount over its possible impact on security and jobs.

MPs are to look into the deal with EADS, which is part-owned by the French and German governments. There are fears British jobs could be put at risk, including about 6,000 in Scotland.

Labour Dunfermline and West Fife MP Thomas Docherty, a member of the defence select committee, said: “Whilst the merger may present new commercial opportunities, we need to understand what the impacts for Scottish jobs may be.”
