Indian man wins appeal to stay in Scotland with his family
AN INDIAN man and his family who faced deportation from Britain will be allowed to stay, it was ruled yesterday.
Swarthick Salins's application for leave to stay in the UK was originally rejected by a judge after his bank balance fell below the minimum level set by the UK Border Agency.
But immigration officials have approved a fresh application, meaning he can remain in the UK with his wife and three children. Mr Salins, 37, has lived in Scotland for nine years and studied for a PhD at St Andrews University.
His children were all born in Britain and he had hoped to get work with Third World agencies and sought approval to stay in the UK.
Earlier this month it emerged that a judge at an asylum and immigration tribunal in Glasgow refused his application as his bank balance had fallen below the required 800 last September.
Mr Salins's case was backed by First Minister Alex Salmond, who wrote to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith urging her to intervene. He also received support from bus tycoon Ann Gloag, whose charity helped support him through university.
