‘I’ll fight on in Tony Nicklinson’s memory’

The widow of locked-in syndrome sufferer Tony Nicklinson will continue his fight to win the legal right to die.

Jane Nicklinson said she would appeal against a High Court decision on her late husband because “nobody should have to suffer like Tony did”.

Mr Nicklinson, 58, a father of two from Wiltshire, died a week after he lost his legal bid to end his life at a time of his choosing, with a doctor’s help.

He had been refusing food and contracted pneumonia. He died at home surrounded by family on 22 August.

Jane Nicklinson, 56, said she hoped his campaign for a change in the law on assisted dying would continue in his memory. She is to lodge an appeal as his wife and carer. The British Humanist Association has also applied to intervene in the case.
