Heart screening launched for athletes
A SCREENING programme to test young amateur athletes for the condition that killed footballer Phil O'Donnell is being launched today.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon will launch the Cardiac Assessment in Young Athletes programme during a visit to Hampden Park this morning.
The pilot will offer free screening to young amateur athletes in a bid to identify those who are at greater risk of Sudden Cardiac Death.
Ms Sturgeon will be shown round the National Stadium's Sports Medicine Centre by SFA chief executive Gordon Smith and cardiology Professor Stewart Hillis. She will also meet a group of young athletes and see a demonstration of how it will work.
Today's launch follows Ms Sturgeon's announcement of the 100,000-a-year pilot plans for the programme at the SNP conference in April.
O'Donnell died after collapsing on the pitch in December.
