Glove story

AS THE English searched for scapegoats, the Portuguese had their hero. The popular newspaper, Diário de Notícias, proclaimed that the nation had found a new footballing star to worship.

He may not be blessed with the poise and skill of the peerless Eusebio or the guile of Figo - but the way 23-year-old Ricardo saved from Vassell and then brushed off team-mates to score the decisive penalty earned him a level of adulation unprecedented even in such a football-obsessed nation.

According to O Pblico, Lisbon’s only highbrow daily, Ricardo wrote his name in his nation’s history books after a "resounding and resilient" performance: "His achievement will never be forgotten."

Leading tabloid A Bola also celebrated his role in the victory - with a wraparound picture of his match-winning save under the headline "Knockout without gloves".
