'Ghost ships' in the Channel

TWO former US naval vessels branded a "toxic timebomb" by green campaigners entered the English Channel yesterday.

The Canopus and Caloosahatchee - two of the so-called "ghost fleet" -will arrive at Hartlepool later this week. Plans to dismantle them have been held up after the proposal was deemed to flout international rules.

Last week, the Environment Secretary, Margaret Beckett, said the ships could be stored temporarily in Hartlepool before being sent back across the Atlantic.
