Franz Ferdinand red-faced over orange

THE rock band Franz Ferdinand sparked a security alert at a New Zealand airport after they took an orange into the country.

The Scottish band, who have sold more than a million copies of their debut album, were making their way through Auckland airport when they set off bleepers on the X-ray machines. The bewildered band members were baffled over the cause of the alarms - until a security guard searched their bag and produced the offending orange.

The musicians found the incident amusing - until they were presented with a NZ$200 (70) fine for bringing the fruit into New Zealand against the country’s rules. Alex Kapranos, the band’s lead singer, said: "They were going crazy and the X-ray machines were flashing.

"We thought, Oh my god, they’ve found the stash of cocaine," he added.

"But it wasn’t. They didn’t give a damn about hard drugs, it was the fact that we were smuggling an orange into the country."
