Foreign crook wins damages

A FOREIGN national convicted of a string of criminal offences has won the right to damages from the Home Secretary – for unlawful detention.

Kosovo-born Ladi Mulliqi, 27, can expect thousands of pounds after spending too long in custody while officials tried to deport him at the end of his sentence.

Mr Justice Irwin, sitting at the High Court in London, said Mulliqi had criminal damage, assault, public order and driving convictions before getting 18 months for robbery in 2009.

The judge said: “What is striking ... is the sequence of contradictory and ineffectual decisions ... on the part of officials acting for the secretary of state.”
