Footballer on assault charge

Teenage footballer Raheem Sterling has been charged with assaulting a woman.

The 18-year-old Liverpool winger was summoned to Liverpool Youth Court yesterday on a charge of common assault. He did not attend the hearing and solicitor Mick Hogan appeared on his behalf.

Police said a 27-year-old woman, who was known to Sterling, suffered “slight” facial injuries in an incident in Toxteth, Liverpool, on 2 November.

During yesterday’s short hearing, Mr Hogan told the court Sterling denied the allegation.

The case was adjourned to
Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on 22 February.
