Fears over foot-and-mouth leak

FARMERS yesterday said they were "extremely concerned" about a "probable" new leak of foot-and-mouth disease.

The virus is believed to have escaped through a valve last week at the Merial Animal Health facility in Surrey.

Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, said it was contained and did not leave the site, which was the source of the foot-and-mouth outbreak in August.

The latest incident comes just two weeks after Merial was handed back its licence to use live viruses for vaccines.

A National Farmers' Union spokesman said: "It's extremely concerning that part of the system at Merial has failed.

"We have been reassured that secondary decontamination systems have worked effectively and no live virus has escaped into the environment.

We are naturally very sensitive."
