Wall smash driver twice drink limit

A MOTORIST who crashed into a wall on his way to work was almost twice the drink- drive limit, a court has heard.

Andrew Sweeney failed a roadside breath test, but policehad to take him to hospital for a check-up before he was fit to give a breath sample at the police station.

Sweeney, 22, of Grangemouth, pleaded guilty to drink driving on the B8046 at Ecclesmachan, West Lothian, on January 30.

Paul Beaton, prosecuting, said Sweeney failed to negotiate a corner and smashed his Vauxhall Corsa into a wall at 6.20am.

He told the court: “A member of the public stopped and offered the accused assistance. He was taken to hospital for medical examination and then to the police station.

“At a quarter to nine the statutory procedures resulted in a reading of 77 microgrammes.”

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Sweeney was fined £535 and disqualified from driving for a year. He was granted permission to take a drink-drive rehabilitation course which could cut his driving ban by a quarter.
