EastEnders wins lion's share of soap awards

EASTENDERS swept the board at the British Soap Awards 2010 last night.

The BBC soap, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year with a live episode, won 10 awards, including Best British Soap, presented by Paul O'Grady.

Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Branning and announced she is quitting the soap this year, scooped two awards – Best Dramatic Performance and Best Actress, which is voted for by the public.

Charlie Clements, who played her husband Bradley, scooped Best Exit, for his death in the live episode which won Best Single Episode.

Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning, won Sexiest Male and Best Actor, which are both voted for by the public.

The Best Storyline went to Who Killed Archie Mitchell?, and Larry Lamb, who played that character, also won Villain Of The Year. Marc Elliott, who plays Syed Masood, a young British Muslim struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, scooped Best Newcomer.

Coronation Street, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, won three awards.

Sexiest Female went to Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre, Best Comedy Performance went to Craig Gazey, who plays Graeme Proctor, and 89-year-old Betty Driver, who plays barmaid and hotpot cook Betty Williams was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award.

Daytime soap Doctors won two awards, Best Dramatic Performance From a Young Actor or Actress and Best On-Screen Partnership.

Hollyoaks won the Special Scene Of The Year, while Emmerdale almost went away empty-handed, but for writer Bill Lyons being given a Special Achievement award.

Coronation Street's Keith Duffy (Ciaran McCarthy) had clearly started partying before the awards. The Boyzone singer embraced EastEnders' Cheryl Fergison (Heather Trott) on the red carpet and began singing.

Suzanne Shaw, who has just joined Emmerdale as man-eater Eve Jenson, joked it was tough for her husband, DJ Jason King, to watch her kissing so many men on screen.
