A RADIO DJ has been censured for his comments regarding the disappearance of the four-year-old Madeleine McCann.
TalkSport's Mike Mendoza told listeners the youngster had been snatched by paedophiles - then linked paedophilia with homosexuality.
Introducing his phone-in programme on the day David Beckham appealed for Madeleine's safe return, Mendoza said: "The other thing that has really got up my nose over the last couple of days ... are the footballers ... and I'm including David Beckham on this one because he's jumped on the bandwagon.
"Now you tell me, paedophiles in general are the type of people that surely would not follow football ... not many gay people to the best of my knowledge are great football fans."
TalkSport suspended Mendoza for a week after the late-night outburst on 12 May and said his comments were "indefensible". One listener complained to Ofcom.
In its ruling issued yesterday, the media watchdog upheld the complaint, saying: "We ... are very concerned that the presenter chose to make such a remark. To connect homosexuality to paedophilia is highly offensive."
TalkSport was also found in breach over a second incident, broadcast in June, in which presenter Garry Bushell said Peter Tatchell , a gay rights activist, was preaching "the gospel of perversion" when he was beaten up during a gay rights rally in Moscow. The station said the comments were "unacceptable".
