Disgraced singer Glitter hopes for early release
THE lawyer for the disgraced rock star Gary Glitter has said he is hopeful his client will be released from jail in Vietnam on child sex-abuse charges early next month.
Le Than Kinh said yesterday that Glitter, 62, had served two-thirds of his sentence and been a well-behaved and popular prisoner. His second appeal is timed to coincide with Vietnam's independence day on 2 September.
In an earlier appeal, Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, had his three-year sentence cut by three months.
"I am hopeful. I believe punishment has now been sufficient. My client has expressed a wish to return home. I do not expect to get a result until 10 September," said the lawyer.
If released, Gadd is expected to fly back to Britain with a British police escort.
No charges are pending in the UK.
