Crime chief admits work to be done
THE man appointed to head the new Serious Organised Crime Agency today acknowledged that Britain’s law enforcement forces were not "on top" of problems such as drugs, people-trafficking and international fraud.
Sir Stephen Lander rejected the idea of a "war on crime", which he said suggested that crime could be brought to an end.
The Bill establishing Soca was being discussed in the House of Commons today.
Sir Stephen said it would allow the creation of the new agency in April 2006, with 4500 to 5000 officers drawn from police, security services and Customs.
In the Lothians, police have seized more than 1million worth of drugs in the last year.
The biggest seizure was last month when officers stopped a car packed with more than half a million pounds worth of cocaine in Edinburgh.
