Coup for Gleneagles as Annan flies in
KOFI Annan, the former secretary-general of the United Nations, is heading to Scotland to give his first speech since leaving the post, it was revealed yesterday.
He will speak alongside Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, at an event being organised by churches and non-governmental organisations to mark almost two years since the G8 summit in Scotland.
The event will take place next month at Gleneagles - the venue for the 2005 summit - and focus on the success of measures such as debt relief brought in as a result of Live 8 and the Make Poverty History campaign.
A source close to the event said: "Once again, the eyes of the world will be on Scotland. The G8 summit was a historic event that led to a ground-breaking agreement.
"This new event is to see what progress has been made and what further is to be done to make poverty history."
