Club backs footballer

FOOTBALLER Robbie Fowler has avoided internal disciplinary action by Leeds United after chairman Peter Ridsdale declared the player was the "innocent party" after Fowler was arrested on Tuesday night following an incident in the city .

Fowler, who moved to the club from Liverpool a fortnight ago, was released without charge - along with a friend not associated with the club - following questioning by police.

Earlier that day, the Leeds squad were told to behave during their Christmas party, where they wore army uniforms and sported toy guns at a couple of nightspots in Leeds.

But afterwards, police arrested Fowler and a friend following an alleged scuffle with a photographer at a service station. Neither was charged.

Mr Ridsdale said: "I am satisfied he was a completely innocent party to whatever took place, therefore the club will be taking no action."
