Cash deal to save Flying Scotsman
THE Flying Scotsman, the world-famous steam locomotive, has been saved from the prospect of a sale abroad to stay running in Britain, it was announced today.
The legendary engine was secured with the help of a 365,000 gift from businessman Sir Richard Branson, thousands of individual donations from enthusiasts and 1.8 million of public funds.
Flying Scotsman Plc had decided to put the engine up for sale after delays in building a visitor centre to house it in Edinburgh. The firm had asked property advisers GVA Grimley to hold a sealed bidding process - effectively auctioning the engine, and prompting fears that it could be sold overseas.
So a campaign was launched, led by the National Railway Museum in York, to raise the money to buy the locomotive. The National Heritage Memorial Fund put 1.8m of its annual budget of 5m grant-in-aid from the Government to the deal.
