Boffins solve leaky water pipe problem

A NEW method of detecting leaking pipes has been developed, leading to record low levels of water loss.

Leaking pipes are a huge problem, with regulator Ofwat estimating that up to 40 per cent of the UK water supply is lost through damaged pipes. A new system developed at the University of Sheffield sees a special valve detect leaks, and Yorkshire Water, which is trialing the method, is reporting its lowest ever levels of leakage.

It works by sending a pressure wave along the pipes which sends back a signal if it passes a leak or a crack.
