Bill for Scots independence

A BILL to allow for a referendum on independence for Scotland was introduced in the Lords yesterday by the Liberal Democrat peer the Earl of Mar and Kellie.

Peers gave a formal first reading to the Scotland (Petitions for a Referendum on Independence) Bill, but it cannot become law because of a lack of parliamentary time. None of the main political parties is likely to support it.

Lord Mar and Kellie said his bill would "petition for a referendum on whether Scotland should withdraw from the United Kingdom".
