BBC tax scheme in MPs’ spotlight

A TAX scheme allowing the BBC and some of its presenters to pay less tax was scrutinised by MPs yesterday.

The Public Accounts Committee heard evidence about personal service companies used by employees not on the
official staff payroll.

Salaries paid through such companies, which are legal, do not have income tax and national insurance contributions deducted at source.

At least 41 BBC “off payroll” freelancers earning £100,000 or more last year did not pay tax at source, with five of these earning more than £150,000 per year,
according to the corporation.
