Animal testing rises again
SCIENTIFIC testing on live animals rose again last year to the highest level since 1992.
Home Office junior minister Alan Campbell said the number of procedures in 2008 was up 14 per cent, or 454,000, on the previous year, to just under 3.7 million. In a Commons written statement, he said there had been an increase for seven consecutive years.
Most tests, 77 per cent, used mice, rats or other rodents. Fish amounted to 17 per cent and birds 3 per cent – with less than 1 per cent of tests involving dogs, cats, horses and primates.
He said most toxicological studies were for the safety and efficacy testing of new drugs and medicines, while non-toxicological procedures were largely into disease prevention.
