Alcohol consumption rate falling say landlords

ALCOHOL consumption is falling at its fastest rate for six decades, according to pub landlords.

The British Beer and Pub Association said that in the first half of this year, the amount we consume per head went down by more than 8 per cent to 3.81 litres.

This is the steepest drop in alcohol consumption since 1948,when it fell by 11 per cent in a year.

The amount we drink has been falling since a peak in 2004, and if the current trend continues by the end of the year it could drop to the same level we consumed a decade ago.

BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds said: "Alcohol consumption is not increasing."
