£1m punter picks up pot
THE punter who placed a 50p bet to become Britain's first betting-shop millionaire came forward yesterday to collect his winnings from bookmaker William Hill.
Yorkshireman Fred Craggs, who lives just outside Thirsk, celebrated his 60th birthday on Saturday after discovering that he had landed the biggest- ever betting-shop accumulator. He placed his record-breaking 2,000,000-to-one wager on Friday.
But Mr Craggs had no idea that he had won until he visited another Hill's shop in Bedale.
"This is the most amazing bet ever placed since betting shops were made legal in 1961," said a William Hill's spokesman, Graham Sharpe.
