Two nursery children hit by E coli bug

TWO children from the same Scottish nursery have developed the E coli 0157 infection.

The pair attend the Step by Step Nursery in Carrickstone, Cumbernauld. The first child was diagnosed on 26 July, with the second diagnosed on 2 August. Both are recovering at home.

The children were not in direct contact with each other. But NHS Lanarkshire' public health protection team has identified a person who provides a possible link between them. This person is not attending the nursery until further tests prove negative.

Dr David Cromie, consultant in public health medicine, said: "I would advise parents of children who attend the nursery that if their child has symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea, he or she should always be kept off nursery until clear of symptoms for a minimum of 48 hours."

A spokesman for Step by Step Nursery said: "We are working closely with NHS Lanarkshire and following the advice of the public health protection team."
