Two die in north east road collision

A teenage driver and his passenger died last night in a crash which police said left a scene of "devastation".

Two other people were injured in the tragedy, on a road in north-east Scotland.

Police said the crash, on an unclassified section of the Turriff to Cuminestown road near to Delagtie, involved a VW Polo and a Vauxhall Astra.

The driver of the Polo, an 18 year-old man from Turriff, was flown by air ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he later died of his injuries.

His passenger, a 15 year-old girl from Cuminestown, was declared dead at the scene.

A second female passenger in the Polo, and the driver of the Astra, were taken to hospital in Aberdeen with injuries that were said not to be serious.

The road was closed for several hours while investigations took place.

Temporary Inspector Graham Sloan said: "The collision scene is one of devastation.

"Yet again we find ourselves dealing with the aftermath of a fatal collision where two young lives have been tragically ended.

"Our thoughts and those of my officers go out to the families of these victims who will have to suffer this loss.

"It is top early to comment on the cause of this collision but I must again appeal to drivers to drive to the road conditions."
