Trick or treat? Medical microdermabrasion and chemical peel
What is it? A double skin treat, currently on special offer, to give you a pre-holiday beauty boost. The treatment combines a chemical skin peel and deep exfoliation to stimulate the epidermis, promoting the production of new collagen and generally brightening up the skin.
Strip off or cover up? You keep all your clothes on for this one – though your hair will need to be scraped back with a hairband and a towel around your neck will help catch any stray drips of water.
How does it work? First my skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried off before the application of, first, a barrier cream, then the acid peel. This is left on for a couple of minutes and, since it can get quite hot and tingly, muslin cloths are laid over my face and cool water dripped over to help relieve any irritation – like a very mild, stress-free form of waterboarding.
Then comes the microdermabrasion, a tiny suction-like process that blasts tiny crystals on to my skin then hoovers them up again, along with all the dead skin. Though some people are said to find this uncomfortable, I found it satisfyingly pain-free.
With that lot over, I am then able to settle down to a bit of pampering. First, a vitamin C serum is applied, then a hydrating marine gel and a cooling recovery cream is gently massaged into my skin. Lastly, sunscreen is applied to protect my newly-revealed skin cells from the elements. Since my cheeks are still looking a little flushed, a little dusting of mineral concealer leaves me ready to face the world.
Does it work? My skin definitely looks and feels smoother, there's a more even tone and I feel squeaky clean, once I remove the remainder of crystals in my hairline and my ears.
Who is it for? Anyone with fine lines, sun-damaged skin or pigmentation. It is also said to be particularly effective on those with acne, blemishes or superficial age spots.
How much is it? 35 (normally 105) until July.
