Therapeutic massage for babies

What is it?

A course of six one-hour weekly sessions to equip parents with a knowledge of baby massage. You practise techniques and develop the way you interact with your wee one. Sessions are in groups of eight to ten.

How does it work?

Parents and babies sit in a circle around Iona, the instructor, who demonstrates on a doll. Each session focuses on a different part of the body, starting with the legs and feet. You learn the benefits (from better sleep to calmer moods) from massaging each part of the body and discover which buttons to press to help your baby relax. As well as the hands-on part, you're taught about your baby's behavioural states, and the best times to massage them. By the end of the course you're likely to have bonded with your baby on a new level, and you'll probably have made new friends too.

Who is it for?

Children under a year old and their parents/carers. It's a good idea to come with a partner or friend, so that if your baby plays up, one of you can still listen to Iona's instructions.

Was it worth it?

Yes. I was sceptical, as I had associated massage with the relief of colic, which my baby has grown out of, but she seemed to enjoy it and slept for ages afterwards. Both my husband and I learned more about interpreting her behaviour and moods.

What does it cost?

38 for the six-week course. One-on-one sessions are also available, as are classes for older children. Prices on request.

Cover up or strip off?

The part of the body you are massaging needs to be uncovered, so generally babies go nude or just wear a nappy. The room was pretty warm but you're welcome to bring a blanket. Massage oil and mats are provided.
