Tributes are paid to former Post editor

More than 150 mourners turned out yesterday to bid farewell to the former long-serving editor of the Sunday Post newspaper.

Bill Anderson CBE died last Thursday following a long illness. His funeral was held on what would have been his 78th birthday.

The humanist ceremony was attended by TV star Lorraine Kelly.

Originally from Motherwell in Lanarkshire, Mr Anderson was appointed editor of the Sunday Post in 1967 aged 34, after studying at Glasgow University. He edited the paper until 1990 and was later appointed managing editor.

While editor, he pushed the paper’s campaign against “dirty milk” which eventually forced a law change in 1983, ensuring all milk sold in Scotland was pasteurised, which he claimed as his greatest achievement.

In 1991, Mr Anderson was awarded a CBE in recognition of his contribution to journalism.

His wife Maggie, who also worked at the paper, described her husband as her “hero”.

She said: “Right from the first interview, I knew I wanted to work for him. He was so inspirational. He made you always want to do your best. Right to the very end I used to say: ‘Bill, you are still my hero’.”
