TRIBUTES have been paid to East Dunbartonshire provost Alex Hannah, right, who has died after a long battle with cancer.

Flags were flown at half mast on council buildings yesterday and books of condolence were opened after it was announced that Mr Hannah, who was 72, had died on Easter Sunday. He represented Bishopbriggs as a Labour councillor since 1995, and became provost in 2007.

East Dunbartonshire Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: "Over the years, Alex and I worked very closely together and it has been my honour to count him as a friend. The people have lost a man who worked tirelessly for them throughout his political career."

Council chief executive Gerry Cornes said: "I would like to pass my condolences to Provost Hannah's wife, May, and his family and friends."
