The great escape
Never mind the Caribbean. In a recent YouGov survey, 32 per cent of UK adults picked Scottish islands such as Arran, Skye and Mull as their idea of the perfect escape. And as the credit crunch continues to bite, they are tipped to enjoy a bumper summer season. Scotland is surrounded by almost 790 islands, 130 of which are inhabited, so whether your tastes run to water sports, whisky trails or walks along a deserted beach, there is probably one to suit you. Coordinating author of the new Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain, David Else, currently holidaying on Arran, says the islands are finally "getting the recognition they deserve".
Go Greek
YOU can now escape the rain and fly to Sardinia on a two-for-one offer with Sardatur (020 8940 8399, www.sardinia-holidays.co.uk). Buy one return flight from Heathrow to Cagliari for 199 and you will receive another free. There is an 80 supplement for flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh, but once in Cagliari you are just half an hour away from the beautiful beaches of Chia and Villasimius. Hurry, though – the offer ends on 11 July.
