Travel chaos continues as wintry conditions take hold across Scotland

FREEZING fog, heavy snowfall and icy conditions continued to take their toll on Scottish commuters and those aiming for a Christmas getaway today.

Police forces across Scotland have advised drivers to take care in the wintry conditions and, where the weather is worst, not to leave home.

The Met Office has issued a warning of further heavy snow today for Strathclyde, Grampian, South West Scotland, Lothian and Border regions.

The Highlands and Aberdeenshire were worst hit as blizzards continued overnight and in the morning.

Snow on the A90 at Marykirk between Aberdeen and Dundee lead to long delays as several lorries had become stuck overnight.

There was also widespread disruption to flights from Scotland's airports due to weather conditions in England and Europe.

Passengers were advised to check with their airline before travelling to airports.

British Airways cancelled all domestic flights at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen until 1pm due to the knock-on effect of snow at other airports.

Low fog was causing visibility issues on the runway in Aberdeen and the bad weather elsewhere has added to delays and cancellations.

A spokesman for Aberdeen Airport also urged passengers to contact their airline before arriving at the Dyce terminal.

And the wintry weather is set to continue.

Clare Allen, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, said: "There will be an icy start with a widespread frost. There will be snow showers in western areas of Scotland.

"Elsewhere there will be some misty patches but it will be mostly dry.

"It will be a very cold day again."

The warning came as it emerged that a man may have frozen to death on the island of Lewis after a night out.

Donald Martin, 35, died in hospital after being found unconscious in the back garden of his home in Stornoway on Saturday.

And a 60-year-old grandmother is in a serious condition in hospital after she became locked out of her Midlothian home in sub-zero temperatures.
