Weather update: Motorists warned of ice on Scotland’s roads
Motorists have been warned to be aware of adverse driving conditions
The Met Office has warned of widespread ice on roads across Scotland which is likely to last until Thursday morning.
A severe weather warning of icy conditions was issued for Strathclyde, Central Scotland, Tayside, Fife, Lothian and Borders, South West Scotland and the Highlands and Islands.
The yellow warning advises people to be aware of possible dangers caused by the falling temperatures overnight.
The Met Office said: “Showers will continue to affect parts of central and western Scotland, at times this evening, tonight and into Thursday morning.
“Clearer spells between these showers will lead to a risk of widespread ice, mainly on untreated roads. In addition some accumulations of snow are likely on some high level roads in the Highlands, mainly above 300m.”
Localised flooding and surface water has been causing problems in Central Scotland following the stormy weather over the past few days.
Tayside Police said that crashes on the A9 had been caused by people not driving to the conditions.
In Argyll and Bute the A83 Rest and Be Thankful has fully reopened after severe weather conditions forced its closure yesterday, and the council said it hoped floodlights would allow the road to remain open during the hours of darkness.
Train services are also returning to normal after the recent disruption.
