AUTHORITIES say Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has been arrested on a driving under the influence (DUI) charge in Maryland.
Transit police say they stopped the 29-year-old at the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore around 1:40am on Tuesday.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police said Phelps was doing 84 mph (135 kph) in a 45-mph (72-kph) zone.
A police spokesperson confirmed that officers had stopped the athlete just past a toll plaza.
Phelps was charged with driving under the influence and excessive speed.
He was released after his arrest.
This is the swimmer’s second DUI charge in Maryland, after he faced the same charge in 2004.
Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 Olympic medals.
