Storm hit Spanish fishing boat rescued near Orkney

A SPANISH fishing boat at the centre of a rescue in the stormy Atlantic seas, off the coast of Orkney, has arrived safely at an island port.

A rescue operation was launched this morning when the O Genita issued a Mayday after being hit by a massive wave, smashing the wheelhouse windows.

Stromness Lifeboat went to the aid of the 33-metre vessel.

The Shetland-based Coastguard helicopter also went to assist, but was forced to land at Westray following lightning.

The lifeboat escorted the fishing boat back to Pierowall on Orkney.
