A RURAL road in Aberdeenshire was completely closed today after an elderly pensioner was knocked down and seriously injured by a marked police car.
The male pensioner was struck as he was walking on the unclassified road between the A96 and Chapel of Garioch, near Inverurie. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
A Grampian Police spokesman said: “The road is currently closed both ways following a road traffic collision between a marked police vehicle and a pedestrian. The incident, which occurred about 8.30 am this morning involved the marked police car, which was on routine patrol, colliding with an elderly male pedestrian, who sustained serious injuries as a result.
“An ambulance responded to the scene and took the pedestrian, who was conscious and breathing, to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The police officer was uninjured.”
He added: “The road is likely to be closed for some time for investigations to be carried out.Inspector Ewan Innes, of the road policing unit, is currently at scene along with divisional officers and members of the force collision investigation unit. As is normal practice, a full enquiry into the circumstances will take place.”
