Forth bridge drivers to be tracked by new cameras

DRIVERS on the northern approach to the Forth Road Bridge will be tracked by enforcement cameras within months, when Scotland’s first variable speed limits are introduced.

Electronic signs on overhead gantries will compulsorily reduce speeds on a five-mile stretch of the M90 and A90 in Fife during heavy traffic or roadworks on the bridge.

The equipment will go into use by the end of the year as part of traffic control measures for the adjacent new road bridge, which is due to be completed in four years. It differs from variable speed limit signs elsewhere in Scotland, such as on the M8 in Glasgow, which are advisory.

South of the bridge, drivers face up to six weekends of major disruption on the M9 from early next month during resurfacing work on an upgraded junction to serve the new bridge.

A contraflow is expected to operate on the two-lane motorway around junction 1a near Kirkliston.

Project officials also said a name for the new bridge would be chosen by next summer, following a public competition to be launched in November.
