POLICE are investigating the circumstances of a fatal accident in which a tourist was hit by a car in the West End of Edinburgh last night.

The incident happened at the junction of Palmerston Place and Rothesay Place. The victim was struck by a silver van-like Fiat travelling north along the road, currently the site of traffic diversions as part of the ongoing tram works.

A police spokesman said: “A woman has died after being involved in a collision in an Edinburgh street. The woman and her female companion, who are both believed to be in their 70s, were in the city’s Palmerston Place around 8:30pm when the accident happened. The women are thought to be foreign visitors on holiday in the city. The driver of the small, van-type vehicle stopped and has been assisting police.”

The road was closed and diversions put in place.
