DRIVERS on Scotland’s main road link to the south have been warned of disruption from 30 June during roadworks to upgrade 17 miles of the M74 and A74(M).
A 40mph speed limit will be in force during the work, with the Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland agency advising motorists to allow extra time or consider using another route.
The work marks the start of a five-year, £40 million programme between junction 12 at Millbank in South Lanarkshire junction 22, just north of the Border at Gretna in Dumfries and Galloway.
It starts with the month-long resurfacing of 2.5 miles of the motorway near junction 12 from 30 June.
This will be followed by work over 11 miles near junction 15 at Beattock from 4 August; near junction 13 at Abington - the A702 Edinburgh turn-off - from 7 August; and near junction 14 at Elvanfoot from 18 August.
Transport Scotland and Autolink, the firm which maintains the road, said: “We urge drivers to plan their journeys in advance using all the available information such as Traffic Scotland website and radio bulletins.”
