A 36-year-old male driver was killed after his car crashed down an embankment and into trees south of Spean Bridge in Lochaber.

Police were called to the scene on the A82 Inverness to Fort William road at 9pm on Sunday, though the accident may have occurred some hours earlier.

Police Scotland has appealed for any witnesses who saw a silver-coloured vehicle leave the road or down an embankment from 5.30pm onwards.

The accident happened about one miles south of Spean Bridge.

A police spokesman said: “It was found that a northbound vehicle had left the roadway and gone down an embankment into an area of trees and that the driver, the sole occupant, was still within the vehicle.

“Unfortunately as a result of the collision, the 36-year-old male driver had sustained fatal injuries.”

Officers from North Divisional Road Policing Unit attended at the locus and the road was closed with local diversions for seven hours whilst enquiries were carried out.
