Depot switch better late than never

EDINBURGH’S trams project finally reached a milestone with the official handover of the Gogar depot to the city council – almost a year late.

The depot will be home to the entire tram fleet and will act as the network control centre when the service goes live in 2014.

The depot is fully electrified and testing has been taking place for the last week on five trams.

Council leader Jenny Dawe said: “There is now much more clarity surrounding the tram project, and I very much hope this continues as we move toward the final completion date of summer 2014.”

Against which programme is the depot only a year late?? I thought the trams were supposed to be running by 2009?? Two years late and two years still to go before anyone can properly ride a tram - if their predictions are right this time.

Edinburgh Tram could recoup just a very small percentage of the cost by allowing conducted tours of the new Gogar depot and a wee hurl up and down the test track or around the train-set like depot track 'layout'! PS- Can I drive? Ding!

ex burgh Now Glasgow. Yes if we had light rail subway like Glasgow and largest suburban rail network outside london like Glasgow does.Which took best part of over 100yrs to build!Glasgows transport is for its citizens firstly.and Glasgow is sitting on a goldmine of disused tunnels and briges and rail lines that run through the heart of the city. The half a line in eburgh is how NOT to do it.

#1 - agreed, what a stupid expression - "clarity surrounding" the project.

Anything to reduce traffic and pollution on busy Edinburgh roads is welcome! Give us more trams and a suburban railway and an underground system. We deserve it ALL. Someone should ask serious questions about competence of those in the City Chambers

Isn't it considerably more than just a year late? And, Jenny, if there is "clarity", why is it "surrounding" the project?
