Transport boost

Over the next few years, large sums of money are scheduled to be spent bringing to fruition many much-needed – and long-overdue – improvements to Scotland’s transport infrastructure. I think of projects such as, inter alia, the completion of the M8; increasing the amount of dual carriageway on the A9 between Perth and Inverness; the building of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route; the opening of Edinburgh’s tram line and the restoration of the Borders railway.

As a gesture of solidarity with those parts of Scotland far removed from these transport improvements, would this not be an opportune time for Holyrood to make a positive statement that, from now on, for every new mile of motorway, dual carriageway, railway line and tram line built, a mile of single track “A” road in Scotland will be upgraded to the normal two-lane standard?
