Traffic clampdown after OAP dies outside hospital

SAFETY work has been ordered at a hospital site where an elderly woman died after being hit by an NHS van, health bosses said yesterday.

Ellen Cornwall, 77, of Penicuik, was killed in the accident, involving a van reversing between the entrance and catering department at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

NHS Lothian said it would be rolling out a programme of safety measures for staff, patients and visitors.

Plans have been drawn up to turn the exit away from the roadway and create a dedicated pedestrian area.

Director of facilities John Jack said: "

The Western General Hospital is exceptionally busy with both pedestrians and traffic, and their safety is a key priority."

An automatic traffic barrier will be installed, turning room for vehicles will be increased and evening nursing staff will be allocated dedicated parking spaces nearby, NHS Lothian said.

New arrangements will also be drawn up with major contractors to avoid large delivery vehicles using the route.
