Town hall faces demolition despite protests

LOANHEAD Town Hall is to be demolished to make way for a housing development.

Midlothian Council made the decision last week, after which MSP for the Lothians, Dr Ian McKee, lodged a parliamentary motion expressing his disappointment.

The motion stated that the decision was taken in the face of strong local opposition and with no public consultation, and encouraged Midlothian Council to reconsider its decision in order to give the community time to come forward with plans to take over the running of the town hall.

The council's cabinet had previously taken the decision to demolish the town hall in private but had to reconsider that decision after facing fierce opposition from community leaders and local people. Hundreds of people signed petitions opposing the move.

Planning permission has already been given to build more than 30 council houses on land surrounding the town hall.
