Tory fights to close bosses' tips loophole

A CAMPAIGN to ensure workers receive all of the tips and gratuities left for them by customers has won the backing of Tory councillor Jason Rust.

A loophole in the Government's minimum wage legislation allows employers to pay less than the minimum wage and make up the difference with tips.

Councillor Rust said he intended to raise the matter through the city council to get Edinburgh-wide support to close the loophole.

He added: "If someone in Edinburgh leaves a tip after a meal or in a bar, they assume it is going to the person or shared among the staff, to thank them for a job well done.

"It is not a subsidy to allow some employers to escape their responsibilities towards their staff.

"There are honourable owners of hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality outlets who ensure that all gratuities are paid to their staff in addition to at least the minimum wage without deductions, but unfortunately it is shocking that some employers are taking advantage of this loophole and hurting vulnerable low paid workers.

"Greater clarity is needed in the law so that consumers know where they stand as well."
