Tories refuse seat on tram committee

TORY councillors have become the latest to say they will not sit on a committee set up to oversee the tram project.

Last week, the SNP said it would withdraw from the tram sub-committee, which has been criticised for not meeting enough.

In response, Councillor Lesley Hinds, Labour's transport spokeswoman, said she would recommend that her party withdraw from the committee.

Now Councillor Allan Jackson, the Tories' transport spokesman, has said his party had decided not to take up a place.

He said: "This committee has met on very few occasions and more information has been made available at various briefings than at the committee.

"The current situation is that a new structure under the chairmanship of the council leader is to be set up, so it may well be that the sub-committee is redundant."
