Tories: Public kept in picture on crime

Police should publish detailed local crime figures and crime maps each month, the Tories have said. The party also wants to introduce locally elected commissioners to replace police boards.

They would hold police to account but would not be involved in operational issues. They would be elected at local elections.

John Lamont, candidate for Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, said: "Giving people democratic control of the police is a huge step forward, but it is not enough. We need to give local people the information and direct powers they need to challenge their neighbourhood police teams to cut crime."
